How do I start recording?
Open Penbeam, click "New recording" on the top toolbar, choose Full screen / Window / Region, then click "Start recording". While recording you can annotate on screen, show a face-cam window, or turn on the teleprompter.
What permissions do I need to grant on first use?
Screen recording is needed to capture your screen, Camera for the face-cam window, and Microphone for narration. These are requested only when you actually use the feature. You can manage them anytime in System Settings → Privacy & Security, or in Penbeam under Settings → Permissions.
How are subtitles generated? Does it need internet?
Subtitles are generated by an on-device speech recognition model — it runs entirely offline on your Mac, uploads no audio or video, and works permanently after a one-time model download.
How do I upgrade to Pro?
On the Mac App Store version, upgrade via Apple In-App Purchase: click "Pro+" → choose a plan → Buy now. The charge is billed to your Apple ID and no account registration is required.
How do I restore Pro after reinstalling or switching Macs?
App Store version: open the upgrade screen and tap "Restore purchases" — Apple restores your entitlement by your Apple ID with no extra charge. Signing in is optional and only needed to sync across devices or other platforms.
What format are exports, and is there a watermark?
Exports are standard MP4 (H.264), ready to upload anywhere. The free version adds a watermark; Pro removes it and supports 4K / original-quality export.
